Smart thermostats are not all the same, and they are not compatible with every system. Heat pumps, two-stage equipment, steam boilers, and ductless units each have particular needs. We tell you which controls work with your system and set them up properly the first time.

Thermostat types and who they suit
| Type | What it does | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Basic digital | Holds one set temperature with simple buttons | You want simple and reliable |
| Programmable | Follows a schedule for weekdays and weekends | Your routine is predictable and you want lower use while away |
| Smart (Wi-Fi) | Learns or follows schedules, adjusts from a phone, and reports usage | You travel, have a second home, or want remote control |
| Multi-zone controls | Manages separate zones in boilers and ducted systems | Different areas of the house need different temperatures |
| Heat pump compatible | Manages heat pump staging and backup heat | You have a heat pump, a dual fuel system, or a mini-split |
Not every thermostat works with every system. Some low-voltage models need a common wire the old thermostat did not use. Line voltage systems, such as electric baseboard, need a different type altogether. We check what you have before you buy.
What a good thermostat setup gets you
Steady temperatures
A well-chosen control keeps a house within a degree or two instead of swinging.
Lower waste
Schedules and setbacks reduce the hours equipment runs when no one is home.
Remote control
Check the house when you are away, and get an alert if it gets too cold.
Better heat pump behavior
The right settings keep a heat pump from leaning on backup heat when it does not need to.
Useful reminders
Filter reminders and fault alerts catch small issues sooner.
A simpler house
One control that your whole household can actually use.
How much you save depends on how you live and what your system is. We do not promise a percentage. We make sure the thermostat is set up to let your equipment work efficiently.
How we install a thermostat
- 1Identify the systemWe confirm the equipment type, voltage, wiring, and stages.
- 2Choose the controlWe recommend models that work with your equipment and your preferences.
- 3Install safelyPower is off during the install. We mount the base, wire it, and label every connection.
- 4ConfigureWe set the equipment type, staging, fan behavior, and any backup heat settings.
- 5Set up your accountIf it is a smart model, we help you connect it to Wi-Fi and the app.
- 6TestWe run heating and cooling modes and confirm everything responds.
Thermostat problems we fix
- Blank display or no response, which is often a dead battery or a power issue
- Wrong temperature readings caused by a bad sensor or poor mounting location
- System not turning on or off when the thermostat calls for it
- Wi-Fi connection that keeps dropping
- A thermostat that works with the old system but not the new one
If your furnace or air conditioner is not running at all, the thermostat is one of several causes. See furnace repair or air conditioning repair for the larger picture.
Why choose Home Heating and Cooling
We install thermostats with the same care as a furnace, because the thermostat is the control that makes a system behave. Fifty years in South Shore homes means we have wired controls for equipment from the 1970s and from last year, and we know where compatibility problems hide.
We are family owned, A+ rated by the Better Business Bureau, and open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If the thermostat is why the house is cold at 2 a.m., call us.

Thermostat Installation: common questions
Will a smart thermostat work with my system?
Probably, but not always. Heat pumps, two-stage equipment, steam boilers, and line voltage heat all have special requirements. We check before you buy.
Do I need a common wire?
Many smart thermostats need one. If your old thermostat did not use it, we can often add one or use an adapter, depending on the equipment.
Can I install it myself?
Some homeowners can. The risk is a wiring mistake or wrong settings that cause lockouts or damage. If you are unsure, we are glad to do it.
Where should the thermostat go?
On an interior wall, away from direct sun, drafts, and heat sources, in a room that represents the temperature of the house.
Does a smart thermostat really save money?
It can, mostly by cutting the hours the system runs when you are away. The effect depends on your habits and equipment.
My thermostat is blank. What should I check?
Replace the batteries if it uses them, check the furnace switch and breaker, and check that the furnace door is closed fully. If it is still blank, call us.
