Indoor air quality is not a single product. It is a handful of separate issues: dust, dry winter air, too much humidity in summer, and stale air in a house built tight to save energy. We look at which of those applies to you before suggesting any equipment.

Signs your ducts are the problem
Rooms that never get comfortable
Weak airflow to one bedroom or an upstairs that runs hot in summer and cold in winter is often a duct issue.
Whistling or rushing sounds
Air moving too fast through undersized ducts or restricted registers.
Dust that returns days after cleaning
Leaky return ducts can pull dusty air from attics, crawl spaces, and wall cavities.
High energy bills
Ducts that run through unconditioned spaces and leak lose heated or cooled air before it reaches the room.
Rooms that never match the thermostat
Poor balancing between supply and return can leave rooms pressurized or starved of air.
Disconnected or crushed duct sections
Sometimes visible in the basement or attic. Always worth fixing.
Ductwork services
| Service | What it solves | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Duct inspection and airflow testing | Finding leaks, restrictions, and balance problems | Uneven rooms, high bills, or before replacing equipment |
| Sealing and insulating | Air lost into basements, attics, and walls | Ducts run through unconditioned spaces |
| Modification and balancing | Rooms that get too much or too little air | Remodels, additions, or a new system that exposes old problems |
| New duct runs | Adding supply to a finished space or an addition | Room additions and finished basements or attics |
| Full duct replacement | Old, collapsed, or undersized systems | When ducts are beyond repair or were never designed for the system |
Before we recommend new equipment on an existing house, we look at the ducts. A new furnace or air conditioner connected to the wrong ductwork will not perform as promised. See our installation service for how we plan the full system.
Indoor air quality: what helps and what does not
The market is full of air quality gadgets with big claims. We keep recommendations to equipment with a clear job.
- Whole-home humidifier. South Shore winters dry out the air in a heated house, which causes dry skin, static, and cracked wood. A humidifier connected to the system keeps winter humidity in a comfortable range. We set the target to avoid condensation on windows.
- Dehumidification. In summer, a properly sized air conditioner removes humidity. Damp basements may need a dedicated dehumidifier.
- Better filtration. A higher quality filter captures more particles, but it also restricts airflow. We match filtration to what your blower and ducts can handle.
- Whole-home air purifier. Some systems add UV or electronic cleaning to the air handler. These can help with specific concerns. We explain what each does and does not do.
- Ventilation. Tightly built or recently sealed houses can need controlled fresh air. We can discuss ventilation options.
- Duct cleaning. It makes sense after a renovation, a pest problem, or mold you can see. It is not a yearly chore.
How we approach an airflow or air quality problem
- 1ListenWhich rooms are a problem, and what do you notice?
- 2InspectWe look at the equipment, ducts, returns, filters, and any humidity concerns.
- 3MeasureWe test airflow, static pressure, and temperature differences room to room, and use a humidity reading where relevant.
- 4RecommendYou get findings in plain language and a short list of options with prices.
- 5Fix and verifyAfter the work, we measure again so you can see the change.
Why choose Home Heating and Cooling
Ducts are where experience matters, because houses built in different decades hide different problems. After 50 years working in South Shore homes, we have seen the sixty-year-old ranch with flex duct from the last remodel, the colonial with a heating system that was never meant for air conditioning, and everything in between.
We are a family owned company, rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau. We tell you what needs fixing, what would help, and what is not worth your money. And we are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for anything urgent.

Ductwork and Air Quality: common questions
How do I know if my ducts leak?
Signs include dust, uneven rooms, and high bills. A technician can test duct leakage and measure airflow to confirm.
Is duct cleaning worth it?
Sometimes. It is useful after a renovation, a pest problem, or visible mold. It is not necessary every year, and it will not fix airflow problems caused by duct design.
Do I need a humidifier?
Many South Shore homes get dry in winter, and a humidifier helps. The right setting depends on your windows and house, because too much humidity causes problems of its own.
Can you add ducts to a house that only has radiators?
Sometimes. Space is the main limit. In many houses a ductless mini-split is a cleaner choice, and we will tell you which is practical. See heat pumps and ductless mini-splits.
Will a better air filter fix my allergies?
A good filter helps reduce airborne particles, but it is one piece of a larger picture. Talk to your doctor about medical concerns, and we will make sure your system supports good filtration without choking the airflow.
Do new ducts change my energy bill?
Sealed and balanced ducts reduce lost air and let equipment run better. The size of the effect depends on how bad the old ducts were.
